Cellular computer networks

Alex Sian has a blog post at RV.net on setting up a cellular network for your computers while traveling, or anywhere else for that matter. The current post only gets started on the subject, but he promises further elucidation in the future.

He briefly discusses using one computer to provide a network for all the computers in the network, or the alternative of buying a cellular router. The latter costs a bit more but is easier for most people to set up and maintain. It’s the approach I intend to use when we start traveling.

Comfort Drive

This post discusses a computer controlled steering system that actually improves handling on rough roads.

The CD product is an electronic steering aid that is located between the steering wheel and the steering gear. It is not connected to, nor does it directly affect any portion of the hydraulic system. It is a software-driven computerized device that utilizes an electro servo motor to react to user steering input, steering gear feedback and self centering predictability. The steering input energy is substantially reduced requiring less force from the operator. The needed input force is slightly increased as the vehicle’s speed increases, but still remains lighter than normally experienced. More about this will follow a bit later. Steering wheel kick from the road is virtually eliminated for the user and is totally handled by the CD. Computing both the operator input and the steering gear feedback, the CD automatically predicts and corrects the steering center. Once this is accomplished the steering weight does not favor either direction regardless of road slope or wind forces.

Simon Warms Himself

In going through Nikki’s pictures, getting ready to take the new lensgames site live, I saw this image of Simon warming himself in front of an unlit fire.

Love this shot!

Cape Disappointment

Ron Dalby has a post about Cape Disappointment, and the newest National Park, the Lewis and Clark National Historic Park. I hadn’t heard of that before, but we’ve been to Cape Disappointment State Park in Southwest Washington, at the mouth of the Columbia River. This is where Lewis and Clark first saw the Pacific Ocean, although they wintered on the Oregon side.

Cape Disappointment State Park in Washington; Fort Clatsop in Oregon, where the Corps spent the winter; and several other sites in both states are now part of the nation’s newest national park, Lewis and Clark National Historic Park. Best to visit in the summer when there is the potential for a break in the incessant rain that otherwise pervades this part of the country.

I hate to give away the local’s secret, but the best time to visit ocean beaches on the Washington and Oregon coast is September into October. During the summer, especially late July and August, the coast often gets coastal fog, and onshore winds that can be cold. But come fall, the weather usually clears up and when it’s sunny, it’s sunny. You still get the onshore breezes, but they’re more like breezes rather than winds.

Mid-entry Diesel Pushers

Here’s a blog entry discussing the plusses and minuses of the mid-entry door on diesel pusher motorhomes. Most DPs put the door in front of the passenger seat, but sometimes some offer a mid-entry floor plan.

On the plus side, the mid entry provided easier access from the galley (kitchen for those landlubbers) to the outside. It also leaves the front passenger side far less crowded and has a stationary floor, no screen door and generally larger windows with far less view obstruction. The passenger seat could also be located further forward more inline with that of the driver. Less wind noise is still another benefit as there was no sealed opening that may have occasion to make sounds.

We’ve looked at the mid-entry diesels, and we really like the fact that when you enter, you don’t look down a long tunnel to the back, but it breaks up the sight lines better. Also like the other advantages listed above. Particularly the mess that the passenger seating becomes with the door there.

Full-Timing

This guy has a dream. I understand that dream, and look forward to starting down that path.

Ahhhh, living the dream! I don’t know about you, but I often have dreams of full timing. Now I know that some of you out there reading this blog are doing just that and I envy you! I think it’s the yearning to have independence. It seems like it would be nice to just get up one day, pull up stakes and move on to another town. Perhaps it’s the gypsy in me!

I’ve been going over pictures we’re uploading to the gallery on Lensgames.com, and I came across this image from a trip to Kalaloch a couple years ago.
